Sharon Van Etten – Taking My Chances

Sharon Van Etten’s new single from her forthcoming album Are We Coming is a weaving piece of dream pop loveliness. While not quite as dark and more accessible than her previous work it still has that otherworldly feel we come to expect from her.  It reminds me slightly of Beach House but with a grittier lo-fi punk edge especially as the piece reaches its end as the drums and guitar come together. It does seem like a lot of artists are changing up their work by adding synths these days, just check out Wild Beasts new album, but it sounds right and along with the distant guitar riffs helps add a lighter touch to the song.

Her previous album Tramp was a stunning piece of work with some great collaborations, namely Julianna Barwick and Aaron Dessner. Hopefully Are We Coming will follow on the tradition and be a worthy successor.
