Hyperdub has some ace female producers sitting safely within its ranks, namely Cooly G and Laurel Halo. Now Jessy Lanza is set to join them with the release of her debut album Pull My Hair Back co-produced with Junior Boys’ Jeremy Greenspan. This is electronic pop but not as you know it. Slightly skewed and off centre production sits tight with soothing and encompassing R&B vocals.
The vocal sample on Kathy Lee really holds the track together leading into Jessy Lanza’s downtempo, almost ethereal voice. I love tracks that sound like slowed down club tunes and I can imagine a remix of this would be killer in a darkened sweaty room somewhere. The video, shot in Hamilton, Canada, features ‘Jed the dancing guy’ who looks like the best person ever. If only I could dance like that. Have a watch above.
