In May 2013 two disco albums were released. One was overrated and made the world dumb with excitement and one slipped past largely unnoticed. Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories was so goddamn hyped that there was no way Classixx’s excellent Hanging Gardens was going to get noticed.
And it should get noticed. The record is a perfect summer album, equally right being played outside in the sunshine or in the dark in a club. It exists in a middle ground, some tracks are more dance-able then others, but it flows and feels whole, a great achievement.
Hanging Gardens also features some ace collaborations, namely Active Child and Nancy Whang among others. It is a shame that Daft Punk overshadowed this duo but hopefully enough people heard this and ended up wanting more. If you didn’t, get on it, there is still a bit of summer left.
